Our Contribution

Student Volunteers

For over 15 years ALTA has provided a Student Program behind the scenes and it’s time we told you about it.  Our philosophy is that students are key to the industry’s future and must be supported and encouraged.  We do this in several ways:

Discount publications

Full-time students receive 50% off all technical conference proceedings and papers, and short course manuals.

Reduced conference fees

Full-time students receive heavily discounted rates to attend ALTA conferences and short courses.

Conference volunteer program

We liaise with Australian universities to coordinate student volunteers to participate in the annual ALTA conference and short courses. Applications directly from students are accepted and encouraged. We include a different student each day in order to share the opportunity with as many as possible.

The goals of the program are to provide opportunities for students to be exposed to latest industry developments and have an opportunity to network with senior technical professionals from the global industry.  ALTA conferences typically attract 40% international presenters and delegates.

Students attend the technical sessions with full delegate benefits, including networking events and receive the technical proceedings. For the conference sessions, students attend the presenter briefings which provides a rare opportunity for one-on-one discussion with keynote speakers, session chairs and presenters.  Short course volunteers attend the full-day short course, receive course materials and engage with a technically-focused group of professionals.

Several student volunteers have later returned as presenters – a rewarding experience for both ALTA and students alike.

“As a student volunteer, you are immediately immersed into a community of esteemed minds who are working to innovatively tackle the biggest challenges in the metallurgical industry. Whilst assisting the fantastic team at ALTA, you get the opportunity to sit in on some of these exciting conferences whilst networking with academics and industry leaders from all around the world! One of my most notable experiences was discussing the future of nuclear power and the energy transition with leaders from several countries. Alan Taylor, his family and the ALTA team guide you every step of the way, they truly are passionate about facilitating the sharing of knowledge across global, industrial and academic borders.”
