Workshop Overviews
We encourage delegates to register their interest for their preferred workshop. Delegates will be contacted closer to the date to confirm that they are still committed to attending nominated workshops before a final attendance list is confirmed.
Please note that all workshops have a cap on the number of participants attending. While every effort will be made to accommodate preferences, in some cases this will not be possible.
Thursday 17 October
WORKSHOP 1: Caution - Watch Your ANS: Navigating the hazards of relational trauma in high stress environments
Time: 1100 - 1230
Facilitator: Polly McGee
If who we are is how we lead, then how we get to who we are, how we know who we are, and how we retain that authenticity when our systems of survival are in high stress environments is a key determinant in our capacity for relational regulation in our ANS. This workshop picks up the key themes of Dr Polly's keynote in a practical deep dive into how we stay out of reaction and in compassion, curiosity and connection as we navigate ourselves and others in our work arenas and beyond.
WORKSHOP 2: ACCCN's Research Advisory Panel - Blue sky thinking: What every clinician
should know about research
Time: 1100 - 1230
Facilitator: Melissa Bloomer and Frances Lin

WORKSHOP 3: Feel the beat…tips for managing IABP therapy.
Time: 1330 - 1500
Facilitator: Marguerita Cirillo
This session is aimed at clinicians who are responsible for the care and management of patients with IABP therapy. The clinician will build on their knowledge of IABP increasing their confidence in managing and troubleshooting IABP therapy.
Key topics discussed include:
- Assessing adequacy of therapy
- Troubleshooting basics
- Managing IABPs in critical situations

WORKSHOP 4: Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS)
Facilitator: Amy Rogers
Bedside nurses trained to apply early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are usually the first responders for patients who develop a cardiac arrest in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
This modified workshop targets those interested in attending a full day CALS course and aims to describe the differences in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) algorithms and training required to respond safely and effectively to cardiac arrest events in early post cardiac surgical patients.
Facilitators will demonstrate instruments used in Emergency Resternotomy and attendees will be guided in best practice with regard to internal cardiac massage and internal defibrillation. A series of short simulations will allow attendees to rotate through various roles and practice role allocation and the technical skills of resternotomy.
