WORKSHOP 1: Research Advisory Panel

The workshop will be an interactive session (participants will practice how to read/critique papers, supported by all speakers).


WORKSHOP 2: Obstetrics in ICU 
Time: 1100 - 1230
Facilitator: Wendy Pollock

This workshop covers the key elements to improve your confidence to care for critically ill pregnant and postpartum women including:

  • Normal spirometry and ABGs in pregnancy
  • Caring for a ventilated pregnant woman
  • Assessment of fetal wellbeing
  • Supporting the establishment of lactation
  • Postpartum assessment
  • Obstetric conditions
The workshop will be a mixture of presentation, discussion and instruction.

WORKSHOP 3: Staff Wellbeing 
Time: 1330 - 1500

Workshop agenda includes the following:

  • Nurses and midwives: why does your health matter?
  • What can I do if I am struggling and need support? What support is available?

WORKSHOP 4: Simulation

WORKSHOP 6: Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS)

Bedside nurses trained to apply early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are usually the first responders for patients who develop a cardiac arrest in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). 

This modified workshop targets those interested in attending a full day CALS course and aims to describe the differences in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) algorithms and training required to respond safely and effectively to cardiac arrest events in early post cardiac surgical patients. 

Facilitators will demonstrate instruments used in Emergency Resternotomy and attendees will be guided in best practice with regard to internal cardiac massage and internal defibrillation. A series of short simulations will allow attendees to rotate through various roles and practice role allocation and the technical skills of resternotomy.

WORKSHOP 8: PrisMax Advanced Therapies – Prismalung+ for CO2 removal
Time: 1100 - 1230
Facilitator: Michael Phillips

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) devices have become  a familiar treatment modality in many ICUs for treatment of patients with AKI and fluid overload. Non-renal extracorporeal applications on these devices are emerging, making them potentially more versatile.

In this workshop, Michael Phillips from Baxter Acute Therapies, covers Extracorporeal CO2 Removal (ECCO2R) for the management of hypercapnia.

WORKSHOP 10: PICU Liberation 
Time: 1100 - 1230
Facilitators: Alexandra Ferguson and Jane Harnischfeger

This workshop will present the PICUStars Liberation program implemented at QCH. PICUStars Liberation is a bundled care strategy which aims to optimise children's  recovery for better outcomes after critical illness. The strategy focuses on maximising patient comfort, early rehabilitation, family involvement and good nutrition to minimise risk of development of critical illness co-morbidities such as delirium, withdrawal and weakness.
